Ukraine can get the status of a candidate for EU membership in a week

The arrival of European leaders in Ukraine was, first of all, a sign of one of the most important decisions for Ukraine right now, namely — obtaining the status of a candidate for EU membership. It will be recalled that Ukraine submitted the application on February 28, 2022, and filled in the first and second parts of the questionnaire during the spring. And now he is waiting for a decision.

For a long time it was believed that there was almost no chance. One by one, European officials said it was too early to grant status. But it seems that a negative prognosis will not come true: during their visit to Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron and Olof Scholz explicitly stated that they support granting Ukraine candidate status. The next day, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also recommended supporting Ukraine. Most likely, these words influenced those who were against: we are talking about Denmark and Sweden, which were initially against — now their decision has changed. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has also said he will support Ukraine, although Italian officials have previously opposed it.

The vote itself will take place in just a week, and of the major opponents so far, only the Netherlands. But there is still some time to change the decision. Together with Ukraine, it is recommended to support Moldova’s application, but Georgia wants to refuse because of non-compliance with European democratic values.

However, it should be understood that the status of a candidate for admission is not yet a participant. For example, Poland applied in 1994 and became a member only 10 years later. The same story was in Croatia: it waited from 2003 to 2013. Ukraine has a lot of reforms ahead of it to gain membership: in particular, the country has been criticized for corruption and lack of fair courts.

Voting will take place on June 23–25.
