Russia did not want NATO near the borders — and got it
Almost immediately after the start of the war in Ukraine, the previously neutral Finland and Sweden changed their minds — and declared their desire to join NATO. In two months, the countries received the support of the people and began to collect documents for the relevant regulations. NATO officials said the two countries had a chance to join, and it was only a matter of time before they could join the North Atlantic Alliance.
Currently, the main obstacle is Turkey. President Erdogan has already said he considers the decision to join the two new Scandinavian countries negative, calling them “shelters for terrorist organizations.” Of course, there are representatives of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party in opposition to Erdogan, who were received in Scandinavia. Experts suggest that Turkey may veto the accession of new countries.
But much more important is Russia’s attitude. Finland has 1,309 km of border with Russia, so its accession to NATO is exactly what Russia has been fighting against in Ukraine. Russia’s leadership has already said that Finland’s accession to NATO will directly affect the country’s security and that they will strengthen their security at the border. But they are not talking about any specific actions.
In addition, the fact of Finland’s accession shows that Russia is not really afraid of bringing the alliance’s sphere of influence closer to its borders and the war in Ukraine — first of all, the desire to return the territories of the union and build an empire. This is also indicated by the fact that Russia has already opposed Ukraine’s accession to the EU, which is not a military organization.
